Duck Rice @ Star Hotel (Carnarvon Street) (lunch)

What a let down if you are a fan of Kulim,Ipoh,New Lane,Petaling Street or Hongkong style duck.Plus it costs $9 per pax which is not expensive if you take into account the humungous portion, ingredients used for marination and species of duck.Surprisingly the owner is not stuck up in the least too no matter how many people there are lining up here.
However this is another pathetic place to come to if you are to arrive at its peak. You may be a decorated General but because the boss favours no one, everyone has to wait their turn(those taking away will be given priority thus the extra waiting period for those sitting down). To pass time you will still have to stare at your cold plate of rice for a full ten minutes, while swallowing your saliva before your duck arrives.
Then when your duck finally does swim in on a plate, you wonder what the fuss was all over because it looks so sloppy with none of the finesse demonstrated by those grand hongkong masters in terms of presentation. It is wet,it is oily, the skin has been allowed to absorb moisture lending it a puffed up look and your rice is littered with smatterings of hot sauce from the precariously balanced saucer that the server rested it upon.
You help yourself to a piece. You chew right?and you chew and you chew and you chew and you chew  until you are shamefully forced take it out of your orifices and put it on your plate so you can use a utensil to cut it up.
What the fish? This has not been tenderised long enough. It is of game quality which ought to be left out to hang and self tenderise on its own.To top it all off,the duck is cut up peasant style, meaning bones, cartillage and sundry are left intact for you to slowly dissect out yourself.
So you take another piece and start with the skin.Who says that it is less fat?there is fat here alright, but the kind of fat you find in chickens that is small and lumpy like it were a kind of cellulite. The kind of fat that doesn't sear well under the roast and which you have to discard or else you might end up feeling sick.
The sauces are nice. The soup is not.It is boiled water decorated with pepper and unappetizing floating ingredients if you ask me.
I tried to like this place,I really did but I can't and never will.
